Snow Returns at Schweitzer Mountain Resort

The snow is back at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Stay tuned to this page over then next couple days (Sunday and Monday) as Schweitzer receives what should be its first significant snowfall of the season. Think snow!

Election Day Snowstorm brings "a bunch" of snow to Schweitzer

This election day has been full of surprises so far, and now there's even more good news. According to the SNOTEL sensors in Schweitzer Basin, the mountain has received up to 6 inches of new snow out of an election day snowstorm. This is great news, and more snow is expected throughout the week, with a slight warmup over the weekend, and more snow over next weekend.

In other news, 49 Degrees North reported 5" of snow at the summit at 4:00 PM, as did Mt. Spokane at 11:30 AM. These totals may inflate slightly overnight. There are no new reports from Silver Mountain or Lookout Pass. But we'll keep you posted.

Weather Forecast - 10/31

In a return that is just as exciting as  the day of their return, we now have a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the coming week. The outlook calls for snow levels dropping to near 2500 feet midweek next week, and an unspecified amount of snow accumulation; however, the forecast is adamant that accumulation will occur. This will likely be the first major storm of the 2008-2009 winter season.

Weather Forecast - 8/24 : Chances of Snow Near Schweitzer Summit

Fall is in the air at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. From the events to the weather, something is definitely changing up in the mountains. Today, it means the leaves are beginning to change. Tomorrow, it will mean snow. Yes, snow has been forecasted near the summit of Schweitzer Peak.

Where, you might ask? Well, just past Big Blue lies Mt. Casey, the soaring treeless mountain that rises to 7,039 feet, one of the highest in the lower Selkirks. How, you may ask? Well, just follow THIS LINK to the National Weather Service page. But I'll relate all the details here anyway.

Cold fronts are moving through now. Expect tomorrow at Schweitzer Summit to be cool and wet, in fact, temperatures will likely not get our of the 40s. Wear a sweater if you plan on riding the Great Escape Quad to the summit for hiking, biking, or riding. Monday night's in the 30s, keeping the opportunity open for a chance of snow, but more likely it will fall as sleet. Tuesday is where it gets interesting, with a slight chance of snow showers after 11am. A low snow level of 6,700 feet will rise to 7,500 feet by the afternoon, meaning the snow level is 300 feet away from Schweitzer Peak. Any precipitation will likely fall as sleet during this time down to the summit level. Tuesday night the snow level will rise to 8,200 feet, out of grasp, for now, for the mountains of the Selkirks. Overnight Lows Begin to Drop as Summer Events Reach their Climax

AS the days begin getting shorter and seasonal lag loses its effect, the lows traditionally go down at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. When the lows go down, the highs often stay fairly high. It gets interesting when precipitation begins to fall. Speculation: how low will the temperatures go? Will it snow? Keep it here at skiSchweitzer. We'll tell you first - just look at the webcam at the right. That mountain in the background is Big Blue, often where the snow accumulates first. Stay tuned for more news

• There's an Artist's Studio class on "off-loom bead weaving" in the White Pine tomorrow, August 23rd, at 9:30 until 12 noon. All ages are invited, but call the Activity Center in advance to RSVP, (208) 255-3081. The cost is $35.
• Music on the Lawn, Sunday August 24th. Live music in Schweitzer main village plaza, open to the public and free.
• Wednesday the 27th hosts Twilight Race Series #4, expect lots of action and lots of fun.
• Friday the 29th, expect the last Movie on the Lawn, where SLIFF comes to Schweitzer for one of their hits from last year, Last Stop for Paul. Entertaining and Free.
• Fall Fest comes to the mountain on August 30th and 31st. Free live music, NW microbrews, and kids activities, as well as chairlift rides and mountain biking.
• Schweitzer Lakedance International Film Festival, SLIFF, returns for 2008. SLIFF2008 will feature more breakthrough directors and actors than ever before. SLIFF2008 goes from the 7th to the 14th. Ticket packages are available starting this month at lakedance.com.

Weather Forecast - 11/23

Great news just in from the National Weather Service! Snow is FINALLY in the air at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, because there is a Hazardous Weather Outlook in store for us. In the words of the NWS:

FORECAST MODELS ARE INDICATING A PAIR OF MOIST AND COLD PACIFIC STORM SYSTEMS TRACKING THROUGH THE REGION ON MONDAY NIGHT AND AGAIN ON OR ABOUT WEDNESDAY. THESE STORMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT AND POSSIBLY HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF THE SEASON OVER THE POPULATED LOWER ELEVATIONS OF EASTERN WASHINGTON AND NORTH IDAHO.

Of course this is GREAT news for all the inland northwest resorts. Here's the lowdown.

Today, expect foggy and then cloudy weather to prevail. There will be a high of 33 degrees, but don't worry, because the low tonight will be about 24. Then, tomorrow, expect another day of fog and clouds, and a high of 32, but falling throughout the day. On Saturday Night, expect a 40% chance of snow and a low of 12 and a wind chill of -2 to 5. On Sunday, expect another chance of snow and a high of around 24. Expect it to get cold again Sunday Night, with a low around 16 and mostly cloudy skies. Things start to get interesting Monday with a 70% chance of snow after 10am and a high of 19. Snow continues into Monday Night with snow showers and a low of 14. Another batch of snow starts Tuesday, with a high near 23. Expect a chance of snow on Tuesday Night and snow on Wednesday and Wednesday Night.

With the recent snowfalls Schweitzer has been experiencing, there is no doubt that winter is in the air at the resort. Here is a forecast for the next few days.

TONIGHT: Chance of snow, low around 27.

TOMORROW: Snow, heavy at times. Accumulation around 1 inch. High around 36.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Snow. Accumulation 1-2 inches. Low 28.

MONDAY: Snow. High around 37.
